News from Key Stage 1

Week begining 30.1.12

In numeracy this week the children have spent time helping Mr Doitup ( who owns a button shop ) who has a lot of difficulty counting 2 digit numbers. The children have made weekly charts showing how many customers have been in his shop, generating their own numbers, recording them and showing real amounts with maths equipment. There's been lots of practise counting in 10's from a given number. The children took up challenges to order 2 digit numbers from smallest to largest, paying attention to the tens and units. Next week the children will be practising counting with groups of numbers.

In literacy the children have managed to create their own rhyming couplets and make rhyming poems related to our topic. Next week we will be creating persuasive posters and letters on the topic of deforestation and global warming.

For homework the children can use the sheet provided to show their understanding of partitioning 2 digit  numbers.

Have a good long weekend, and enjoy the snow if we get some!

The Year One Team

WE:27/01/12

What a wonderful week of learning.

Literacy

During our literacy sessions we have continued to learn how to make notes and have used the internet and books to make extra notes for our undersea project.  We have begun to link our work in ICT by begining to think about our project presentations.

We have also begun to group our notes into the relevant categories by highlighting similar themed pieces of information.

Numeracy

We have finished our pirate adventure, the children helped Jack Sparrow rescue the princess by working in teams to answer some tricky money problems.

Our main focus this week has been looking at recording data and presenting it.  We have watched footage of the largest aquarium on earth and made a tally chart to represent the numbers of different ocean animals which swam past.  From this data we have made pictographs and bar graphs to represent it.

In mental maths we have continued to look at times tables! Keep practising at home!

We have also continued to make our under sea creatures, 2W have used mud rock to cover their animals and 20 will be ready to do it next week.
