This week the children have been looking at alternative pronunciations for;

ie - sounds like ee - chief, thief

a - sounds like o - squash, wasp

y - sounds like 'i' - crystal, mystery, pyramid

Reading - many, any, eyes, please.

Writing - when, what.

 

Phase 3

Miss Coles

Recapped on 'ch' words from last week e.e. chain, chalk, ches and looked at the 'sh' sound.

Tricky words - my, you, I

 

Phase 2

Mrs Hawkins

Revisited, single sounds and letter formation C, K.

Main focus - ck(two letters that make one sound).

Blending and segmenting CVC words containing the CK sound - sock, sick, sack, pick, pack.

 

The children were encouraged to count the sounds on their fingerrs before writing the CVC word.

Revisit ch,sh,th,ng by focusing on where we find these sounds in different words.

Segmenting and blending these sounds in words - chop, shop, then, ring.

Tricky words - you, are, all.

Revisited phase 3 graphiemes ai, ee, oi, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, ear, air, ure, er.

Reading focus words - were, there, little, one.

Phase 6 Support for Spelling

Mr O'Neill

 

Revisited word endings - ing, ed, s, er, est, y, en.

Revisited our spelling rules - letters with (e) at the end, (y) and letters with a consonant.

Began to loook at base words that need to be changed before suffixes are added but some do not!

e.g. spite(ful), Merry(ly), play(ed),

 

Quiz words : Which spelling rule applies to the words below?

stop(ing), mad(er), skip(ed), hike(ing), messy(est), lucky(er), run(ing), hot(est).

Can you add different word endings to the words above?  Do the same spelling rules apply?

Revisited single sounds C - K

Reading and writing tricky words - the, no, I, to, go

We have been reading captions with previously learned phonemes, encouraging children to use fingers to help them blend and segment VC and CVC words.

 

Phase 3 Mrs Campbell

Sounds learned ai and ee.

 

Tricky words - you, her, they.

 

We read sentences using our previously learned phoneme skills.

We also practiced letter names.

 

Phase 3 Miss Coles

This week we have been learning the sound Z, ZZ and Qu. We have been reading, sounding out and spelling words containing these sounds e.g. Zebra, Zip, buzz, queen, quiet and quick.

We then used these words to create our own imaginative sentences including the tricky words he, she, my, they.

 

Phase 4 Mrs Wood

We have been learning to read the words frown, groan, brush, scoop, growl.

we have lso practised spelling these on our whiteboards.

Friday rocket spellings: Smart, Groan, My, Her, Scoop, Treetop, Floating, Frown.

 

Phase 5  Mrs Beswetherick

This week we have been looking at the sounds 'ch' and  'u' and their alternative pronunciations.

 

Ch

Chain,Church - sounds like 'ch'.

Christmas - sounds like 'c'.

Charlotte - Sounds like 'sh'.

 

U

Union, Future - sounds like 'y'.

Push, Bull - sounds like 'u'.

 

OW

bowl, rowing - sounds like 'oa'.

down - sounds like 'ow'.

 

Phase 6 Support for Spelling Mr O'Neill

We have thought about the endings - ing, ed, es, er, y, ens.

We used these to revisit the spelling rule with words ending in e. Such as like, bike, hike.

 

We have learned the spelling rule with words ending with consonants.

Stop - Stopped

Run - Running

Shop - Shopping

 

Spelling word list

 

Biker, Hiking, Bony, Shopping, Running, Connected.

We have used a collection of these sorts of words and wrote our own sentences.

Phonics Update

 

Phase 2

At phase 2 we have been revisiting single sounds/letter formation.

We have been blending and segmenting CVC words like - got, pot, cat, mat.

We have also been reading tricky words like the, to, no, I, go.

 

 

Phase 3

We have been writing and reading the letter 'x'.

Recapping 'v' and 'w' sound.

Staring the 'y' sound.

Our tricky words are :  no, go, I, the, to.

Revisiting sounds j, v, w, x

Teach y, z, zz, qu

Reading tricky words - be/me/was

Blending and segmenting cvc words - yap, zip, buzz and quiz.

 

Phase 3

Revisiting qu, ch, sh, th at the begining and ending.

Tricky words we, me, be, he, she.

 

Phase 4

We have been learning about,

CCVC words e.g. spot.

CVCC words e.g. tent.

We have also revisited the graphems 'ai' - train. 'ee' - steep.  'oi' - spoil.

Words to spell - was, you.

Words to read - have, like, same, come.

 

 

Phase 5

We have been focussing on alternative pronunciations such as,

a in hat, acorn, grass

o in hot, don't, both

c in cat, acid, icy.

In both reading and writing.

 

Phase 6 Support for Spelling.

We have thought about past tense verbs and how to change the endings in words to turn them into the past tense.

 

We have added 'ed' to endings to change the word. e.g. Walked, Connected, lived, jumped, talked.

 

We have also changed the ending for words ending in e and found the spelling rule of taking off the e when we replace it with endings such as ing, ed, er, y, est, 

 

e.g.

like = liked,

bike = biker,

bone = bony,

hike = hiker, hiking.

 

Spelling list.

Lived, scratched, frightened, climbed, throwed, happened, connected, played.

Word games - think of words and change the endings ing, er, ed, y, est.


Update...

Over the past few weeks the children in Key Stage 1 have been bonded into Phonics groups.

In the first week of Term 2 the children will be sent home either with a new or an updated 'Sound Book'. You will also be told which Sound Group they are in.

The website will then be updated on a Friday, starting Friday 11th November, explaining which sounds your child has been learning.
