Judo is a Japanese Olympic sport with its roots in Martial Arts. It was started in 1882 by an educationalist called Professor Kano. Gleeson Judo are very much focused on the physical education principles of the sport, which are of significant benefit to our students.
About the Club
Sessions run on a Monday morning for forty-five minutes before the start of school. We would expect to start off by running through the register and some warming up/gym type exercises. Judo uses the body in many different ways and gym skills are very useful in assisting with this development. Previously learnt Judo skills would then be run though. New skills would be looked at and practised. Judo is a very complex activity and needs a lot of hard work to improve the skill base. Time has to be spent really getting to know the techniques well. The throws and grounds work moves will then be practised in progressively real situations strictly orchestrated by the coach. Sessions are very short but we try and make sure that no time is wasted and the students come away having learnt and improved their Judo!
Benefits from Judo include development of fine & gross motor skills, general fitness, development of self-confidence and self-discipline. A sense of responsibility and cooperation to and with the others in the club group should also grow as all work towards the common goal of skill improvement.
Combe Down Judo Club is always happy to welcome new members, so if you feel like giving it a go please just come along on a Monday morning with you PE kit and see what you think! See you there...

About the Coach
Finn Gleeson is the Judo teacher and makes up half the partnership that is Gleeson Judo, the other half being his wife. Both their children go to Combe Down and one attends the Judo club. Finn’s wife is Japanese and helps with the Japanese contacts of the company and the development of those contacts to improve the teaching of our Judo.
Finn started judo about twenty-five years ago under the tutelage of his father G. R. Gleeson (9th Dan) who was the first National Coach and produced many books, articles, films and lecturers on Judo.
In 1992 Finn followed his father’s example and went to Japan to develop his Judo, training at the Kodokan International Judo Institute (where judo was started) the National P.E. University and Waseda University in Tokyo. Other training centres were also attended around the city. Competitions were entered both in Japan and UK.
Finn is a qualified teacher and has taught many ages and levels in different subjects in many different educational institutions both in Japan and UK for nearly twenty years.
