Religious Education
At Combe Down Primary, we want all children to develop an understanding of major world religions and their impact on society and culture.
We believe that religious education provokes interesting and challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God/gods, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong, and what it means to be human.
As a Church of England School, we develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity, but also those of other principal religions and worldviews that offer answers to important questions such as those above.
We believe that it is important that children should have the opportunity to reflect on their own personal beliefs and values in a safe and non-judgemental environment.
We also feel that studying religions and cultures of others, in conjunction with the teaching of other subjects such as PSHE, enhances the personal development and well-being of each pupil and encourages them to develop their own strong moral compass.
We believe that the teaching of religious education promotes mutual respect and tolerance in a diverse society, in line with British Values. In teaching RE effectively, we build a culture of inclusion and celebration of diverse beliefs, values, customs, traditions and festivals.
From September 2026, we will be introducing an enquiry-led, knowledge-based spiral curriculum in religious education which we hope will deepen pupils’ understanding of this fascinating subject still further.
