Leadership Opportunities
At Combe Down Primary, we believe that leadership is an essential part of every child’s personal development. We are committed to building character, confidence, and a strong sense of civic responsibility by providing meaningful leadership opportunities for our pupils.
Our leadership roles are designed to give children a genuine voice, allowing them to shape our school community while developing vital life skills like teamwork, resilience, and mutual respect. We ensure that these opportunities are inclusive, giving every child the chance to lead, inspire, and make a difference. Please see below for an overview of our current leadership opportunities for pupils:
Pupil Leadership Team
Pupil Leaders are elected annually by the children, with four representatives from each year group (2 from each class) from Years 2-6. The pupils meet regularly with the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher to discuss items which affect the everyday running of the school, such as clubs, lunchtimes and play, and community events, celebrations and rewards. Pupil Leaders are expected to gather the views and opinions of their classmates and feedback to the senior leadership team, as well as share and set into action new initiatives which they themselves have devised.
Librarians
Our Year 6 librarian team manage our busy school library. They are a group of reading enthusiasts with a passion for books who run weekly library sessions for each year group. Having read the job description, they apply for their positions in writing at the start of Year 6 explaining why they would suit the role. The Year 6 teachers select an appropriate team, whose main responsibilities include the lending and record keeping of books, making reading recommendations to fellow pupils, and keeping the library organised and tidy.
House Captains and Vice-House Captains
Our House Captains and Vice-House Captains are Year 6 children who lead the four house teams of Bannerdown, Solsbury, Lansdown and Lyncombe. Their responsibilities include helping to run inter-house events, leading school tours for prospective families, counting the termly house points and leading whole school events. House Captains are elected positions, with the electorate made up of house members from Years 3-6. Candidates must deliver a speech to their house team explaining why they would like the job and what would make them successful in the role. The process provides an experience of democracy in action, highlighting the importance of this British Value in giving everyone a voice.
Vision Champions
This year, we have appointed 10 Vision Champions who will help to bring our school vision to life. At Combe Down, the Parable of the Mustard Seed is at the heart of everything we do, reflecting our commitment to creating a safe, nurturing environment where every child is valued, welcomed and encouraged to flourish. Our Vision Champions play an important role in promoting our vision and values across the school. They lead projects, contribute to worship and services, and inspire others through their actions and leadership. To apply for the role, children are asked to write about why our school vision is important to them. Class teachers and Miss Dulku (RE lead) then select 10 outstanding pupils who consistently demonstrate our ethos and serve as excellent role models for others.
