Sustainability
BackSustainability is an important part of our curriculum, helping children understand how their choices can care for the world around them. Through subjects such as science, geography, and design and technology, pupils learn about topics like climate change, reducing waste, protecting wildlife, and using resources responsibly. We encourage hands-on learning through activities such as recycling projects, gardening, and exploring our local environment, giving children real-life opportunities to make a positive difference.
Learning about sustainability at a young age empowers children to become thoughtful, responsible global citizens. It helps them develop critical thinking skills, understand the impact of their actions, and build a sense of responsibility for the future of our planet. By embedding sustainability across our curriculum, we aim to inspire pupils to respect the environment, make informed choices, and feel confident that they can contribute to a more sustainable and healthier world.
Alongside our main curriculum, we bring Sustainability to the very fore every year since 2023 by celebrating the UN World Environment Day with our own 'Environment Week'. Each year, we aim to match the theme of the UN World Environment Day, taking care to make it appropriate for our pupils and choosing a suitable charity partner to support through fundraising efforts across the school. So far, our themes have been:
2023 - Only One Earth - charity partner: WWF
2024 - Tremendous Trees - charity partner: The Woodland Trust
2025 - Plastic Pollution - charity partner: The Marine Conservation Society
2026 - Inspired By Nature - charity partner: TBC
In previous years, our Environment Weeks have been enriched by author visits, expert workshops, additional Forest School sessions and partnership work with Ralph Allen School, encompassing both practical and creative activities. Sponsored by our wonderful PTA, we have been able to purchase resources to support our teaching and learning of this important topic, including a wide selection of fascinating books which are available for all to use in our library.
Recently, we have been busy writing our Sustainability Action Plan for our school moving forwards, to ensure that Sustainability is always at the forefront of our teaching and learning - this will be uploaded to this section of our website very soon.
